Increase Leverage for Your Online Business

The purpose of leverage is to return the greatest advantage with minimum effort. Specifically, for internet businesses that means greatest profit with minimum personal involvement.

Previous articles described ways of providing leverage by 1) re-using content, and 2) re-purposing. In this article, we’ll focus on increasing leverage by outsourcing routine, or non-value-add work, and any work that simply doesn’t fit our personal skills, experience and/or temperament.

Marcus Buckingham and Curt Coffman described some interesting findings from 25 years of Gallup organization research - initially in their book, First, Break All the Rules: What the World’s Greatest Managers Do Differently, and then elaborating on those findings in several subsequent books. Two of their most important findings for online marketers and home-based business owners in general are these: 1) Emphasize your strengths, not your weaknesses, and 2) Acquire staff for talent.

Affiliate business has a rather large learning curve and involves many different skills. Unfortunately, few people are personally skilled at all of them - and even those who are may not be making the best use of their available time and other skills should they focus on their weaknesses.

William of Occam, best known for “Occam’s Razor,” has stated: “It is vain to do with more what can be done with less.”

Tim Ferriss, author of “The 4-Hour Workweek” is a big advocate of the use of virtual assistants to handle repetitive, non-value-add tasks or other non-favored tasks. It may come as a surprise to realize that outsourcing is not limited to major corporations, but given the low cost of international virtual assistants, even small, home-based companies can afford to outsource many tasks to virtual assistants.

One task that many internet marketers choose to outsource is writing articles. They see the value of article marketing, but either can’t write well, or simply don’t want to, so they outsource article authoring to ghost-writers.

Another task you might consider outsourcing to a virtual assistant (or call center) is the telephone and email follow-up required for lead generation and sales closings.

If you focus on your areas of strength, you gain the benefits of leverage and multiply your results, whereas, focusing on your weaknesses will only incrementally improve results.

According to the Wikipedia dictionary, leverage is “A force compounded by means of a lever rotating around a pivot” and “By extension, any influence which is compounded or used to gain an advantage.” The second component of that definition has the most applicability for home-based businesses.

Leverage is generally described in either fiscal or mechanistic terms, but it applies to many different situations as well, including the world of online businesses.

So how shall we interpret “any influence” for our affiliate income businesses?

One of the fastest and easiest ways for an affiliate income business to leverage our results is by re-using accessible content. I’m sure you’ve seen the countless ebooks currently advertised on the internet - most of these are examples of re-using content, although some may have been originally written as ebooks, most began as a single blog post, or a response to a customer email, perhaps even some FAQs.

Financially, the leverage benefit is generally written as a ratio of some kind, for example, a debt-to-equity ratio. Such ratios are useful for bookkeepers, but that is not the audience I’m addressing here.

What advantage can we realize by leveraging our existing content? Consider the following simplistic example (no rocket science here): Assume you could write a single document for one customer in ten hours and then sell it for $50.00. You have earned $50.00, but it took 10 hours of your time to earn that $50.00; effectively, you would have earned about $5 per hour (less than the current minimum wage) for your work but you would not have made any profit on that sale.

If, however, you take that same document (and change it to remove any non-generic info) and offer it as an ebook via the Web for $19.95, and that you ultimately sell 100 copies of your published ebook. You would have earned $1995, and if you deduct the $50 to create the primary article with a reduction of another $5 to remove any customer/proprietary info, that would leave you with an increased profit of $1940.00.

This simple example demonstrates the leverage advantage, specifically the benefit obtained from re-using existing content.

Once we become familiar with leverage, we can learn how to apply it in many different ways to our businesses. This article has addressed one of those ways. Other articles will discuss other ways that affiliate businesses can improve ROI by using leverage.

Using the sub-heading for each of the steps, ways or secrets makes it easier for your article to be scanned by the eye and more appealing to read.

Keep the formating of your article so that it has lots of short paragraphs, doing this again makes your article easy to read. The way it works is the easier your article looks to read the more people are likely to want to read it.

By turning off your screen and writing your article you’re stopping yourself from editing what you’re saying as you write, this helps you become more creative. It doesn’t matter if you make loads of mistakes, just turn your computer screen back on again when you’re done and make all the edits you need to make.
